UP-AIR™ methodology

A structured AI readiness methodology for energy organisations.

UP-AIR™ is the UK Petroleum AI Readiness Framework: a practical system for understanding readiness, identifying realistic use cases and planning responsible AI next steps.

Why we developed UP-AIR™

Energy companies need structure before AI implementation.

Many organisations are interested in AI, but the early discussion is often too broad: tools, vendors, automation, data platforms and pilots are mixed together before the organisation has checked readiness.

UK Petroleum Co. Ltd developed UP-AIR™ as a practical methodology to organise that early stage. It helps energy-sector organisations separate opportunity from hype, identify internal gaps and decide whether they are ready to proceed, need preparation, should redesign the idea or should wait.

The purpose is not to replace technical implementation. The purpose is to prepare a clearer business, data, governance and use-case foundation before implementation decisions are made.

What it does

UP-AIR™ turns AI interest into a structured readiness view.

The methodology gives leadership teams a clearer way to understand whether their organisation is prepared for practical AI work and what should happen before vendor selection or pilot activity.

01

Readiness baseline

Reviews the organisation’s current position across data, systems, people, governance and operational context.

02

Use-case direction

Identifies where AI could support real business or operational needs rather than generic technology interest.

03

Risk and constraint view

Highlights gaps around data quality, accountability, IT/OT boundaries, compliance, change management and internal ownership.

04

Next-step route

Defines a practical route: proceed, prepare further, redesign the concept or wait until critical conditions improve.

How it works briefly

  • Collect basic organisational and operational context.
  • Review readiness across defined assessment areas.
  • Score practical maturity and identify weak points.
  • Map possible AI use cases against readiness and risk.
  • Produce a clear route for responsible next steps.
How it supports decisions

UP-AIR™ is a decision-support system, not a software product.

The methodology helps organisations decide what to do before they spend time and money on AI implementation.

It supports conversations between leadership, operations, IT, data teams, commercial teams and external providers by giving everyone a common structure: what problem are we solving, what data do we have, who owns the decision, what risk exists and what is the correct next move?

Discuss AI Readiness
Outcome

A clearer pathway before AI adoption.

UP-AIR™ helps energy organisations avoid vague AI activity by creating a practical readiness view, a use-case direction and a controlled route towards responsible adoption.
